Well, it is spooky season, and what better way to enjoy it than to scare yourself silly with some of the best horror movies to grace the big screen this year! When I tell you, the horror movie industry has been in their BAG this year! Big shout-outs to Shudder, A24, Neon, and Blumhouse for giving us constant scary and gory work. Now, some people may disagree with the movies I’m about to list, but these were personally some of the best horror movies of 2024 that I’ve seen. I honestly can’t wait to see what Horrorwood pulls out next year. So, here are the 8 best horror movies of 2024!
8. Abigail – Creepy Fun Among the Best Horror Movies of 2024
Starting off the tail end of the list, we have the vampire movie Abigail. This movie has one of the things that terrifies me the most in movies… a creepy child. Not only a creepy child, but my girl is a vampire who was minding her own business, and random people decided kidnapping her was a good idea. The thing with this movie is the comedic moments in balance with the horror. It was definitely creepy and had some good jump scares, but it was well-balanced. The cast worked really well together and gave a great horror performance. The reveal of one of them already being a vampire and setting them up was a great twist—SPOILER ALERT! This was a fun, creepy, and violent watch, and it definitely deserves more love.
7. Infested – A Terrifying Creature Feature
Now, I like a creature feature as much as the next person. But this one definitely took it for me. I DO NOT like spiders, but I’ve always been fairly entertained by 8 Legged Freaks. Don’t ask me why. But THIS is not that. This is a French film—funny, because that’s my second language. Anyway, it’s about a group of friends that go to collect spiders, and the spiders grow in size very quickly. Not only that, they multiply faster than rabbits. Think Aliens, but with spiders. It’s really gross, actually. They kept this movie TIGHT. It’s creepy, it makes your skin itch, and overall, it’s just really entertaining. Shudder definitely knew what they were doing, and it deserves a spot among the best horror movies of 2024.
6. Speak No Evil – Another Must-Watch Among the Best Horror Movies of 2024
Listen, if James McAvoy is in it, I’m watching it! His range is AMAZING. In this movie, one family meets up with another family just to have a little vacation—something so obviously innocent. James’ character Paddy and his wife are the odd couple with the odd, silent son who has no tongue. Things fall apart for the normal family rather quickly after realizing that Paddy and his wife Ciara are just insane. They kept this story close to the vest, making everything intense but still a fun and crazy watch. This is definitely one of the best horror movies of 2024, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing this role. Coming off Split, it’s easy to see why he was chosen. This movie is so great.
5. Longlegs – Nicolas Cage at His Most Eccentric
We all know Nicholas Cage is a bit on the crazy side. BUT, this one definitely shows how crazy he can be. Neon did their big one with this movie. Longlegs is about an occult leader (Cage) who has committed several different murders without being present at them. The whole story is twisted and involves numerology and clairvoyance, ending with the craziest sequence of events—entire families dying and an accomplice appearing out of nowhere! It’s a wild ride and definitely worth being considered one of the best horror movies of 2024.
4. Alien: Romulus – Sci-Fi Horror at Its Best
As we approach the middle of the list, I just want to say that Ridley Scott ALWAYS knows what he’s doing. And Alien: Romulus is proof of that. Even though he wasn’t the director and was only credited as the producer, he clearly had a hand in the story, and it shows. Alien: Romulus is essentially about a group of people trying to gain freedom. They end up on a ship that is, to no one’s surprise, full of aliens, face huggers, and eggs. David Jonsson as Andy was phenomenal—he absolutely nailed his role. The story is tight and terrifying at the same time. THAT ENDING?! Oh my gosh. This is such an amazing movie and worth being on the list of the best horror movies of 2024.
3. Oddity – One of the Best Horror Movies of 2024 with Creepy Dolls
One thing I’ll tell you now: Shudder is taking these top three spots. Their films are just too good. Oddity is definitely one that should be studied for its creep factor. Everyone who knows me knows I DO NOT like dolls—ventriloquists, marionettes, NONE OF THEM! Which is funny because Dead Silence is one of my favorite horror movies. Anywho, Oddity is about a blind sister who finds out her twin has been killed. She stays at the house where it happened and brings along a giant wooden doll. Weird things happen, and the movie just twists deeper into madness. From the story to the cast to the cinematography, this movie proves you don’t need a huge budget to scare people. Definitely one of the best horror movies of 2024.
2. You’ll Never Find Me – A Psychological Horror Highlight of 2024
Another Shudder original right here, and this one is a doozy. This movie features only two people, taking place in a small, single location, with an airtight script! It’s hard to describe without giving too much away. A young girl arrives at the home of a man relaxing during a violent storm. The two bond while her clothes dry, but as they talk, they provide conflicting and suspicious information about themselves. It becomes a mental chess game, making it hard to tell who is the cat and who is the mouse. Creepy and captivating, it truly captures what a horror movie should be. This film undoubtedly deserves its place among the best horror movies of 2024.
1. Late Night with the Devil – The Best Horror Movie of 2024
Well, here we are at the number one spot. When I tell you this movie deserves everything, I mean it. This isn’t just the best horror movie of 2024—it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. From the way it’s shot to the script to the cast, it’s top-notch. Movies about possession are usually predictable, but this one breaks the mold. It’s about a talk show host who brings a girl possessed by a demon onto his show to boost ratings. You think you know how it’ll end, but the wild twists take you by surprise. The film makes you feel for the characters—most of whom are just doing their jobs. It masterfully captures the audience and scares them in a way that few movies do. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.
The movies of 2024 have all been fairly decent, but the horror genre has truly carried the year. Some of the best horror movies of 2024 don’t even come from giant studios. Shudder, Neon, A24, Blumhouse, and Lionsgate have delivered unforgettable scares this year. It’s hard to imagine a year without at least one great horror film from these studios.
