Telling Stories That Resonate: A Cultural Relevance Guide for Brand Managers

Cultural relevance is the cornerstone of telling a great brand story. I was taught that every great salesperson is also a great storyteller. I believe the same to be true in marketing. Storytelling shouldn’t just be a tactic, but the heartbeat of your brand. Audiences now demand to know more about companies and successful brands keep it more than surface level. Customers want to be able to see brands that they can relate to. Brands that reflect their values. Brands that have real people behind them that share their identities. Customers even expect personalized experiences and for brands to help them create memories. For brand managers, the challenge is crafting stories that resonate authentically and culturally.

At Blerd, storytelling is at the core of everything we do. From our merchandise to our marketing campaigns, we focus on cultural fluency and authenticity to build connections with diverse communities. For our consumer products, we weave our culture and values into every product that we release. Let’s dive into how your brand can do the same.

Why Cultural Relevance Matters in Storytelling

Information flows freely now and audiences are savvy. They can tell when your brand is just trying to ride a trend and sell something versus a brand that truly understands them. Cultural relevance builds trust, inspires loyalty, and fosters deeper connections. You have to both see and understand your customers.

When I started Blerd in 2019, I noticed at conventions that Black people were not represented in the merchandise being sold. There would be plenty of us at these shows, but no cultural relevance was shown.

Brands that succeed in storytelling weave cultural awareness into their narratives, making audiences feel valued and represented. At Blerd, this has been our guiding principle since our start in 2019.

Case Study: BLK and Cultural Connection

When we partnered with BLK, the dating app for Black singles, the focus wasn’t just on visibility; it was on authenticity. By being in the community, Blerd knew that there were many single Black nerds looking for that special someone, but connecting wasn’t always the easiest. We also were tapped into the growing love of anime by the Black community in general. By tapping into the nuances of both Black culture and nerd culture, we created a campaign that felt true to its audience. From experiential events, in-app stickers, and partnerships with influencers who reflected the app’s values, the campaign resonated deeply, driving both engagement and downloads.

The BLK campaign highlights the importance of understanding your audience’s culture, not just marketing to them. Success lies in creating narratives that reflect their lived experiences

How Blerd Weaves Culture into Merchandise

At Blerd, cultural relevance is the foundation of our brand. Since our launch in 2019, we’ve worked to celebrate our PIQ (Positivity, Inclusion, Quality) culture through storytelling, whether in our marketing campaigns or Blerd merchandise.

Our apparel, for instance, isn’t just clothing; it’s a statement. Our streetwear tees have quotes that reflect the company’s values. At the start of each year we put a special focus on one of the tenets of PIQ. Each one of our brands characters also embodies our company’s culture and have stories of their own.

Blerd’s consumer business designs products that celebrate the intersection of geek culture, Black identity, and fandoms. From anime-inspired tees to gaming-themed hoodies, every piece tells a story that connects with our community. This cultural fluency is the secret to our merchandise’s success. We believe this can serve as a model for any brand that is looking to resonate authentically.

The Foundations of Cultural Relevance In Storytelling

Understand Your Audience on a Deeper Level

Authentic storytelling starts with knowing who you’re speaking to. Research your audience’s cultural values, preferences, and lived experiences. I would even recommend going to hang out where your target customers hang out. For example, user-generated content (UGC) allows brands to reflect real voices, making campaigns more relatable and impactful.

Our article, How UGC Enhances Influencer Marketing Campaigns, delves into how UGC creates authentic connections.

Make Storytelling Human and Relatable

When you tell a story, you’re inviting your audience into a moment, a feeling, or an experience that resonates with them on a personal level. Most of the best social media content has a level of relatability. This relatability is what turns passive viewers into engaged participants. It’s not enough for a brand to simply exist; customers want to know the why behind your story, the people behind your products, and how you reflect the values they hold close.

Relatable storytelling starts with empathy. It’s about understanding not just who your audience is, but what moves them. Take, for instance, how brands like Dove have built campaigns around self-esteem and body positivity, tapping into universal struggles and joys. Dove even worked with the Open Source Afro Hair Library to put out the Code My Crown guide to help guide creation of Black hair in videogames. At Blerd, our approach is rooted in celebrating culture and shared experiences. Whether it’s a cosplayer repping their fandom or a gamer finding their community in our Discord, our stories showcase real people and real passions.

Use Real Stories to Build Trust

Every person, every brand, every community has a unique story. Lean into that authenticity. Real stories told by your team, your customers, or even the people who have been impacted by your product are key. These stories resonate far more than scripted perfection (things almost never go perfectly planned anyway). They build credibility and emotional depth, reminding your audience that there are real people behind the logo.

Don’t shy away from emotion; it’s what makes storytelling human. The best stories tap into emotions like joy, hope, pride, or even vulnerability. They reflect the highs and lows of shared experiences, helping audiences see themselves in the narrative. The key is to balance emotion with authenticity; people will connect if the sentiment feels genuine.

Great storytelling creates lasting memories and builds narratives that stay with you audience; even long after a campaign ends. . This might be through a powerful visual, an unforgettable event, or a message that aligns perfectly with their values. At Blerd, we amplify the voices of our community. Whether it’s highlighting creators or sharing testimonials from fans who feel seen and represented by our brand, we make sure our stories feel as real as the people they represent. For your brand, focus on crafting stories that not only inspire but leave a lasting impact.
