Marvel Rivals dropped its Season 8 reveal and the internet lost its mind over a big red dinosaur. And honestly? Fair. Devil Dinosaur looks incredible as a playable Vanguard. But there is a problem. A very specific, very blerd problem. The smartest character in the entire Marvel Universe was turned into a plot device instead of a playable hero. Again.

The Dino Has Entered the Building

Season 8 of Marvel Rivals is called Sins of Alchemax, and it launched on May 15, 2026. The story drops players into a war in Nueva York, the futuristic version of New York City straight out of the Marvel 2099 comics. The villain this time is Alchemax, a mega-corporation with serious secrets and a bad habit of capturing superheroes.

Alchemax grabs both Cyclops and Moon Girl at the start of the season. Moon Girl being kidnapped is what wakes up Devil Dinosaur. He smashes out of wherever he was resting and charges into battle to find her. In the character reveal trailer, you can see just how massive he is on the battlefield. He is officially the 50th hero added to Marvel Rivals, and he fills the Vanguard role, which means he is your frontline tank.

As a Vanguard, Devil Dinosaur does exactly what you would expect from a giant prehistoric predator. He tramples enemies, bites them to apply bleeding effects, and pops a massive force field dome that blocks incoming projectiles. He is one of the biggest playable characters in the game. He plays like an aggressive area-control tank who has to stay in your face to do his job right. Basically, he is every offensive lineman who ever played football combined into one very large, very red reptile.

Before the Red Scales, There Was the Valley of Flame

Devil Dinosaur did not start in a video game. He started on the comic book page. Jack Kirby, the King of Comics himself, created Devil Dinosaur back in 1978. Kirby wrote and drew every single one of the nine issues in the original run. The series ran from April to December of that year at Marvel Comics.

Here is a piece of comic book history that not enough people know. The whole reason Devil Dinosaur exists is corporate competition. DC Comics was working on an animated series based on Kirby’s earlier creation, Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth. Marvel saw this happening and told Kirby to create something similar and to put a dinosaur in it because kids in the 1970s went absolutely wild for dinosaurs. Kirby delivered, as Kirby always did.

In the original comics, Devil Dinosaur lived in a place called Dinosaur World, also known as Earth-78411. It was a prehistoric alternate reality full of danger, rival tribes, and very bad days. His first companion was Moon-Boy, a young humanoid from the Small-Folk tribe who saved Devil’s life when he was just a baby dinosaur being attacked by a rival tribe called the Killer-Folk.

That attack from the Killer-Folk is important to understand. Exposure to their fire triggered a mutation in the young dinosaur. His skin turned flame red. His intelligence grew beyond that of a normal animal. And his loyalty to Moon-Boy became unbreakable. The two of them fought off threats ranging from rival tribes to literal time-traveling witches and alien invaders. For a 1978 comic about a red dinosaur, it got very strange very fast. Kirby absolutely loved that.

The series only lasted nine issues before Kirby left Marvel to pursue animation work. After that, Devil Dinosaur spent decades showing up in cameos, team-up books, and the occasional wild crossover. He bumped into Godzilla in 1979. He briefly joined the Circus of Crime after getting stranded in modern New York. He was one of the most lovably strange characters in all of comics. Then in 2015, everything changed.

The Smartest Person in the Marvel Universe

Lunella Lafayette first showed up in November 2015 in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Issue 1. The series was written by Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, with art by Natacha Bustos. She came in as part of Marvel’s All-New, All-Different initiative, and she did not come in quietly.

Lunella is a nine year old Haitian-American girl from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She is also, as confirmed in the pages of the comic by Amadeus Cho himself, the smartest person in the entire Marvel Universe. Not the smartest kid. Not the smartest young hero. The smartest person. She tested above Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, and Victor Von Doom. Doctor Doom refused to accept it. Lunella did not care. She had work to do.

Her classmates called her Moon Girl because she was always daydreaming and spacing out. She wore boxing headgear, roller skates she built into her shoes, a computerized utility belt, and a spring-loaded boxing glove she invented herself. She worked in a secret lab she built under her school. She was nine years old. She was already one of the most compelling new characters in comics history.

Lunella’s story started when she found a Kree Omni-Wave Projector buried under the Brooklyn Bridge. She identified it as alien technology and figured she could use it to prevent her own Inhuman genes from ever activating. She did not want her Inhuman transformation. She wanted control over her own DNA. That is a nine year old doing molecular biology on her own after school. Like we said. Smartest person.

Then one of her coaches accidentally grabbed the device and spun it. The projector opened a portal from Dinosaur World straight to her school’s playground. The Killer-Folk came through first. Devil Dinosaur came through right behind them. Moon-Boy had just died in Dinosaur World. His dying wish was for Devil to follow the Killer-Folk and avenge him. So now Lunella had a giant red dinosaur in her neighborhood, a gang of prehistoric cavemen causing chaos in Manhattan, and parents who were about two seconds away from grounding her forever.

The Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur comic ran for 47 issues, from 2015 to 2019. In that time, Lunella fought the Kingpin, outsmarted Doctor Doom, briefly turned Devil into a human boy she called Devin to sneak him into class, joined the Secret Warriors during Secret Empire, and cemented herself as one of the most important new characters Marvel had introduced in years. She was genuinely that girl.

In 2023, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur became an animated series on Disney Channel. Lunella was aged up to 13 for the show, voiced by Diamond White, with Devil Dinosaur voiced by Fred Tatasciore. The show ran for two seasons, ending in March 2025. Lunella was the first Black teenage girl to lead a Marvel animated series. That is not a small thing. That is a historically significant moment in children’s media.

A Bond That Goes Beyond the Comics

What makes Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur special is not just the history. It is what the relationship between them represents. Devil Dinosaur has always needed a partner to reach his full potential. In the original Kirby comics, that was Moon-Boy. An unlikely alliance between two outcasts who the world did not understand. That has always been the soul of the character.

Lunella gave that idea new life and new meaning. A Black girl genius from the Lower East Side that the world kept underestimating. A prehistoric predator the world feared because of how he looked. Together they were unstoppable. The storytelling here is not accidental. It is not subtle. It is exactly the kind of story that kids who grow up feeling like they do not belong grab onto and never let go.

You cannot tell that story with only half the duo present. A Devil Dinosaur story where Moon Girl is kidnapped so he has a motivation to fight is not their story. That removes her genius. That removes her agency. That makes her a reason instead of the point. She is not a reason. She is the whole point.

So Where Is She?

Here is the actual crime. Marvel Rivals has 50 playable heroes as of Season 8. Out of those 50, only four are Black. Black Panther, Storm, Blade, and Cloak from the Cloak and Dagger duo. That is eight percent of the entire roster. In a game built on the Marvel Universe, a universe with a deep and rich history of Black characters, eight percent is not representation. That is tokenism with better frame rates.

Moon Girl is exactly the kind of character who would fix this problem. She is beloved by comics fans and cartoon fans alike. She had her own two-season animated series on Disney Channel. She is officially the smartest person in the Marvel Universe. She has a built-in reason to be in this game because her literal partner is already in this game. And instead of giving her a kit and a gameplay slot, the developers made her a hostage in the story.

Now, some fans argue that Lunella would be tricky to design as a playable character. She is nine years old in the comics. The game skews toward older audiences. But the animated series already aged her up to 13. And Marvel Rivals already aged up Peni Parker to make her work in the game. So that argument does not hold up. An older Lunella with her full gadget kit, her roller skates, her force field tech, and her mind-swap mechanic would be one of the most creative hero designs in the game’s entire history.

Some community voices pointed out that Moon Girl appearing in the Season 8 story at all suggests she is being set up as a future playable character. That NetEase is building toward her reveal. That is possible. We genuinely hope it is true. But hope is not representation. Watching the Black girl genius get kidnapped so the big creature has a reason to fight is not the introduction she deserves, no matter what comes after it.

Devil Dinosaur without Moon Girl is like getting the SP//dr robot without Peni Parker inside driving it. Or getting Groot without Rocket. Or getting the Bifrost without Thor. The character works in isolation. But the soul of what makes Devil Dinosaur special in the modern Marvel era is his bond with Lunella Lafayette. That bond deserves to be honored. Honoring it means she needs a playable slot.
