Dragon Con is always the best, but this year really tipped into being the biggest Blerd party of them all. This year, it didn’t seem to matter if you were repping Wakanda, stomping around in your best mecha cosplay, or just arguing over the best anime of 2024 (how are we going to settle that one?). The energy is electric. This con caters to the range of panels, meet-ups, and events that normally would appeal to any other niche. Gone are the days when conventions like these weren’t for just anyone.

This is a community like no other. You can feel it when you walk through the crowded halls of Atlanta hotels, spot someone in an epic Spider-Verse cosplay, and immediately bond over your mutual love for Miles Morales. Among the Blerd meetups, there were favorites this year, from events like the “Black Anime Fans Unite” panel to the “Afrofuturism in Sci-Fi” discussion. Black Nerds were loud, proud, and making our mark in every fandom.

The Cosplay: Next-Level Creativity

Let’s talk about the cosplay game at Dragon Con 2024. Been to so many conventions that maybe, but the creativity and commitment I witnessed this year were at another level. The Blerds were on fire for real. One group did the Proud Family perfectly, while there was also a jaw-dropping mash-up with Black Panther and the Power Rangers. Originality was top-notch.

The Blerd Cosplay Showcase has Black cosplayers on stage showing off an incredible amount of work put into their costumes. The creativity and workmanship displayed for these characters are just beyond awesome. And shout out to the sister who rolled up as Storm from X-Men—she absolutely killed it!

The Panels: Representation Matters

Dragon Con 2024 wasn’t just about the fun; it also brought knowledge.

This year’s panels were fire, especially those on representation in media. The panel on the “Evolution of Black Superheroes” was the one that really dove deep into how far we’ve come in the comic book world and into what more needs to be done. Hearing from creators and industry insiders about the importance of diversity behind the scenes was another reminder that although we’ve made great strides, there is definitely still work to be done.

Another must-see was the “Black Voices in Animation” panel. We heard from some of the dopest Black animators and writers in the game, discussing their journeys and the challenges they’ve faced in the industry, which is slowly starting to wake up to the fact that Black stories matter. It was empowering to see so many young creatives in the audience soaking up knowledge and getting inspired to go tell their own stories.

The Parties: A Vibe Like No Other

If you’ve ever been to Dragon Con, then you know that the nights are just as important as the days. And this year was a definite raise. The place to be was the Blerdcon After Dark, with DJs spinning everything from Afrobeats to classic Nerdcore jams. It was electric, and it really helped seeing so many Black nerds just let themselves go and have fun together.

It was a reminder that this community isn’t just about the fandoms—it’s about the fellowship.

And, of course, there was the annual Dragon Con parade, in which so many Blerds were represented. Marching down Peachtree Street in full cosplay was really something. To experience it in reality, feel the energy, and stay among thousands of people with a similar kind of flame is just cool.

Wait Times and Long Lines

With so many events and parties, there was little for it except to walk through the lines and stand. These lines often stretched for two hours or more, such as the one for the Bunny Hutch party that kicked off the weekend. That is just the nature of a convention this large; with so many people attending, long waits are unavoidable.

When planning for Dragon Con, keep in mind potential long wait times and pack your best walking shoes. The convention spans many hotels, so that could mean long walks. If you are disabled or have any mobility impairment, plan to get to events early that you don’t want to miss.

The Verdict: A Must-Experience for Every Blerd

Dragon Con 2024 would always be everything a Blerd could want and more. From top-tier cosplay to thought-provoking panels, it exuded a strong sense of community and representation throughout the weekend. If you have never gone, just do yourself a favor and start planning now for next year. This is where we belong, where we thrive, and show the world that Black nerd culture is here to stay.
