Representation matters. Black professionals currently make up only 9% of the STEAM workforce (Pew Research). This underrepresentation underscores the importance of initiatives that bridge the gap and inspire Black youth to see themselves as future innovators. While some corporations push back on DEI initiatives, it is more imperative than ever to make sure that Black nerds are represented in the STEAM space. For Blerds, STEAM isn’t just a career path; it’s a space to amplify our voices and challenge stereotypes.
As homeschooling parents of five, my wife and I make it a priority to involve our children in STEAM activities. Whether it’s signing them up for FIRST Lego Competitions or visiting science museums during our travels, we’re constantly seeking ways to spark their curiosity. Each museum offers unique regional perspectives on technology, showing our kids the diverse ways people innovate across the country.

Recently, my wife had an incredible moment at her cardiologist’s office. The nurse recognized the Blerd brand and shared his story. He explained how he didn’t know what to call himself until he discovered our website and social media. Now, he proudly identifies as a Blerd, inspired to pursue his passion for technology.
