Herald and Bumblebee: A Staple in DC Comics

Herald and Bumblebee are most definitely a staple in DC as a couple. They have been together, essentially from day one and they haven’t been separated from what I can remember. They have moved from team to team TOGETHER as well as being married, being retired together and getting back into the hero game together. This is a couple that I don’t think DC would ever actually be able to break up. I think the fans would riot at that point because they are THE couple. So let us get into the true love of Herald and Bumblebee!

Herald and Bumblebee: The Origins of a Power Couple

The two of them have been a couple mainly from the beginning and after Mal Duncan aka Herald gets his powers, he wants to join the Teen Titans. After joining the team Karen aka Bumblebee wanted to make her man look good in front of the team. So she made a suit and attacked the team, let Herald lead the team to “defeat” her and she escaped without the ruse being revealed. I’m not sure if Mal KNEW about this plan, but if he did, he hid it well. At some point later SHE revealed what she had done and they were so impressed that they offered her a spot on the team as well and BAM, Teen Titan power couple.

Herald and Bumblebee: From Titans West to Marriage

They stayed together and even moved to San Francisco together so that they could be part of Titans West. But the team ended up dissolving. Even with the team going away their love didn’t. They ended up getting married after that team dissolved and they even decided to retire together. And honestly that was a great move for them at the time but they couldn’t stay away. The Titans West was revived a few times but it never really got off the ground as a team, but they would not be part of the team without each other. It was either both of them or neither of them.

Herald and Bumblebee: Facing Adversity Together

At this point they did everything together including being injured. Mal’s horn exploded in his face and damaged his lungs and vocal cords. During Infinite Crisis Karen was physiologically altered to 6 inches which puts pressure on her heart and can cause her to go into cardiac arrest. The both of them now are with Doom Patrol and receive special medical attention to keep them both alive.

Herald and Bumblebee: A Testament to Black Love in Comics

This is definitely the couple that takes their vows very seriously and it is 100% “till death do us part” with them! I love the way that they are written together, they are the rare black love in comics. They haven’t been broken up and in every universe, they are together in some way which says so much about their relationship. It’s definitely true love between the two of them. More of their relationship development will surely come to light as they are with Doom Patrol and it just proves that black couples can exist in comics and ACTUALLY be in love without it being built on mess and drama. They show how they handle these things together and it just WORKS! Black love wins.
