What’s Iyanu?
Hey Blerds! We’ve got some electrifying news straight from the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF). Cartoon Network and Max just announced that Nigerian Afropop superstar Yemi Alade will be recording and performing the theme song for the upcoming animated series “Iyanu“.
“Iyanu” is an epic superhero series rooted in Nigerian culture and mythology. Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, this show is based on the popular graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder by award-winning Nigerian creator Roye Okupe. This collaboration brings together the vibrant sounds of Yemi Alade, the creative minds at Lion Forge Entertainment, Alcon Sleeping Giant, and the series’ lead composer, Femi Agunbiade. Known as “Mama Africa,” Yemi Alade is a powerhouse in the music scene, celebrating African heritage with her dynamic performances. She’s performed for prestigious audiences like the United Nations and the British royal family and has a collection of accolades, including a Grammy Award for her collaboration with Angelique Kidjo. Her hit singles and albums have made waves across the globe. Alade’s latest album, Rebel Queen, dropped on July 26th.

“Iyanu” follows an orphaned girl who discovers her unique powers and must save her people from an ancient curse. Set in the enchanting kingdom of Yorubaland, the series features an all-African voice cast led by award-winner Serah Johnson as Iyanu, with talents like Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Stella Damasus, Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello bringing the story to life.
When and Where to Watch:
Get ready! “Iyanu” is set to premiere in the U.S. and across Africa in 2025. U.S. viewers can catch it on Cartoon Network and Max, while Showmax will air the series in 44 African countries.
