The relationships in Marvel comics can become a bit messy and some of them don’t seem to work. But then of course there are those relationships that come out of absolutely nowhere and do better than the ones that are fairly obvious. One relationship in particular that came out of nowhere is between Sam Wilson and Misty Knight. It came out of nowhere because of how much time Misty spent with her ex Iron Fist. It seemed as if they were going to continue to be an on again, off again relationship in the Marvel Universe which does tend to happen a lot. But the relationship between Misty and Sam seems to be one of the most balanced and down to Earth relationships ever pushed in this universe.
Now we all know Misty Knight in some fashion. Whether you saw her in the comics or you watched her in Luke Cage and Iron Fist on Netflix. She made her presence known.
Now, her and Sam actually have a lot in common because they both have that military/officer background going for them. But Misty, after losing her arm, takes a different route in her career as a hero than does Sam. Sam is still pretty straight laced but he bends when necessary, whereas Misty bends when it is convenient for her. The two of them actually cross paths in a definite sense when Captain America ages rapidly and ends up handing the shield over to Sam.
Misty shows her support to Sam in being Captain America when she sees everything he goes through in having the shield while being a black man. Something she knows all too well coming off of working with Luke Cage and how he was treated by anyone outside of his immediate saving area which was Harlem. Even how he was treated by the police in Harlem when he was simply trying to assist where they would not. That rock to his back is exactly what Sam needed. He needed someone else who understood what it was that he was going through and what he was going to go through when he picked up that shield.
At some point later Misty Knight was undercover and she and Sam would end up together again. While she was in Bagalia which was ruled by Hydra, Sam was going against Crossbones and got injured. And she was right by his side, revealing her undercover work and causing them to team up. And through this second direct connection, a romance bloomed that has gone on to this day. Even when he ended up giving the shield up and going back to being the Falcon. They did break up briefly but when she started working for Beyond they got back together again and have been together since.
Their romance definitely needs more attention on the pages of Marvel Comics because amidst all the chaos were they able to pull themselves together into a non-super powered power couple. From two completely different angles as the Beyond Cooperation is actually kind of shady but it keeps Misty in a good position. But other than that, their romance is definitely something to be studied as it is really just two regular people finding each other in the world of super hero vs aliens on a daily basis.It’s also fun to see a black couple stay together when the whole world wants to pull them apart for whichever reason.
Misty Knight has been the anchor for Sam when no one else was. When he continues to doubt himself on keeping that shield, she’s right there to remind him of why he has it in the first place. And when she has been in trouble, he has been there to get her out of it or they lift each other up through training and sparring. Truly a beautiful couple. And a truly down to Earth couple for anyone to look up to for real.
